Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy that focuses on behavior and learning. The overall goal of ABA is to figure out why a child behaves the way they do and then focus on ways to encourage those good behavior habits while correcting the harmful behavioral habits of the child. ABA focuses on positive reinforcement in order to decrease those unwanted behaviors. The therapy helps improve socially significant behaviors including communication and social skills, memory, academic performance, and language.
How does the ABA therapy work?
ABA Therapy typically follows these general steps, however these experiences are completely unique to each individual child.
A qualified and trained behavior analyst (BCBA) designs and directly oversees the program. They customize the ABA program to each learner's skills, needs, interests, preferences and family situation.
The BCBA will start by doing a detailed assessment of each person’s skills and preferences. They will use this to write specific treatment goals. Family goals and preferences may be included, too.
Treatment goals are written based on the age and ability level of the person with ASD. Goals can include many different skill areas, such as:
The instruction plan breaks down each of these skills into small, concrete steps. The therapist teaches each step one by one, from simple (e.g. imitating single sounds) to more complex (e.g. carrying on a conversation).
The BCBA and therapists measure progress by collecting data in each therapy session. Data helps them to monitor the person’s progress toward goals on an ongoing basis.
The behavior analyst regularly meets with family members and program staff to review information about progress. They can then plan ahead and adjust teaching plans and goals as needed.
ABA therapy programs also involve therapists, or registered behavior technicians (RBTs). These therapists are trained and supervised by the BCBA. They work directly with children and adults with autism to practice skills and work toward the individual goals written by the BCBA.
Individualized ABA Treatment
At Ample Joy we design individualized ABA therapy plans specifically designed to improve independence and to ensure long-term success. Our goal is to empower families impacted by autism to achieve independence and their best quality of life.
Skill and Behavioral Assessment
Our first step is the Inter-care Skill and Behavioral Assessment. This assessment reveals valuable information about your child’s comparative mastery of five developmental milestones.
Functional Behavioral Assessment
The Functional Behavioral Assessment pinpoints challenging behaviors that your child is exhibiting in home, school, or social situations. Next, we design an individualized plan that fits you and your child’s unique needs and one that carefully addresses the challenges revealed by the assessment.
Target Goals
We determine the best behavioral supports to help your child to be successful at school, at home, and within the community. Individualized target goals are important at this stage, so these goals are developed for each child according to required foundational skills.
Since each child’s personal deficits and strengths are different, we tailor goals and methods accordingly in the intervention plan. We then begin individualized therapy, providing the most innovative, personalized care possible at each stage of treatment. The evidence-based techniques we choose are always rigorously researched.
